DIY Painted Rocks

Last summer my kids and I got together to paint rocks for my flower gardens. This was very successful and we all took pride in our creations. We searched Pinterest and Google for ideas. My son painted a Minion, and a shark. My daughter painted a watermelon. I painted colourful ladybugs, and a couple of bees. They all turned out amazing!

For the winter, I stored the rocks in our shed to protect them from the snow in hopes they would last longer.

Just a few weeks ago my son and I were getting the gardens ready for summer and we thought it needed more rocks! I dug out all of our supplies and found we had some rocks leftover from last summer. On this occasion my son created a Spider-man face, and a few rocks to identify our vegetables in the garden. I painted an M & M, and rocks for the vegetable garden as well.

Painting rocks is addicting and a lot of fun. The end result is so satisfying. If done right they will last for a long time.

I live in a small town and it’s sometimes difficult to get out to the stores that may carry products I need. I invested in Amazon Prime and order so many things online and get them within 2 days. I ordered all of these materials (except the rocks) online.

First step is to either buy some nice river rocks or go out searching for rocks with a smooth finish. I did both. I bought some rocks from Michaels craft store and spent way too much on them. If I were to buy them again, I would go to a local Home Building supply store. Last summer we had construction on our street and there were rocks scattered every where. My son and his friend spent time wandering around collecting the perfect rocks. If you’re using rocks that you have found outside, give them a wash to get off any dirt.

Next, decide what you will create! Depending on the design, you might have to paint in stages.

We put our rocks outside in the sun to dry. Once completely dry you will want to put a couple coats of clear Mod Podge on them to protect the rocks and make them last.

That’s it! Super easy.
